Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans to invest at least US$5âŊbillion in South Korea by 2031, the countryâs presidential office said. The commitment comes as South Korea aims to become a topâthree global AI powerhouse.
The funding will go toward building new AI dataâcentres on the outskirts of Seoul, boosting domestic infrastructure for advanced computing and artificial intelligence.
AWS CEO Matt Garman made the pledge during a meeting with South Korean President Lee JaeâMyung at the AsiaâPacific Economic Cooperation Summit. He also revealed AWSâs broader plan to invest US$40âŊbillion in 14 nonâU.S. APEC countries by 2028.
The announcement aligns with a wider push that saw seven global firms commit a combined US$9âŊbillion in investment over the next five years in South Korea. With its strong memoryâchip industry and ambitions in AI, the country is positioning itself as a major technology hub.
