Despite trimming other holdings, legendary investor Warren Buffett and his conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway continue to hold roughly 400 million shares of The Coca‑Cola Company — a position worth about $28 billion and making up nearly 11% of Berkshire’s equity portfolio.
Buffett’s first investment in Coca‑Cola dates back to 1988, when he began buying into the beverage giant. That initial stake has grown more than 20‑fold in value, and this year alone the company’s dividend payments to Berkshire are expected to exceed $800 million.
While Coca‑Cola has lagged many of Buffett’s other bets in terms of growth — delivering just around 90% total return since 2016, compared with the broader market’s 275% — Buffett remains unfazed. His rationale: a global brand with durable competitive advantages, dependable cash flows and consistent dividends — exactly the kind of business he prefers to hold “forever.”
