U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Monday that the United States could impose higher tariffs on Indian imports if New Delhi does not take stronger action to reduce its purchases of Russian crude oil. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized that Washington is unhappy with India’s continued energy trade with Moscow amid global concerns about Russia’s role in the Ukraine war, and signaled that tariff increases could be implemented quickly if cooperation does not improve.
Trump, while criticizing India’s oil purchases, also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “good guy” who understood U.S. displeasure.
The United States previously doubled import tariffs on Indian goods to 50% in 2025 as punishment for heavy imports of Russian oil, one of the highest tariff levels imposed on any trading partner.
Despite the tariffs, India’s exports to the U.S. grew in November, and New Delhi has been pushing for a trade deal, including asking refiners to report weekly Russian and U.S. oil import data.
India’s commerce ministry has not yet responded to requests for comment on Trump’s latest threat.
