Roblox to enforce age‑verification for chat features

Gaming platform Roblox will soon require users to verify their age via facial recognition before gaining access to its chat functionalities, the company announced. According to Head of Safety Matt Kaufman, users will be asked to take a selfie and the system will estimate their age to assign them to an age group—such as 9‑12 or 13‑15—ensuring they can only communicate with others in the same bracket. The move comes amid mounting government pressure and lawsuits in the U.S., where Roblox is facing legal scrutiny in states including Texas, Kentucky and Louisiana over child‑safety concerns on its platform. The company said the rollout will begin in December in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands, with a broader global launch scheduled for January. By the third quarter, Roblox had averaged 151.5 million daily active users, making it one of the most popular online destinations for children.
