Mattel Unveils First-Ever Autistic Barbie Doll to Promote Inclusion and Representation

Mattel, Inc. has introduced its first-ever **Autistic Barbie doll**, designed to champion representation and inclusivity for children through play. The new doll was created over more than 18 months in **close collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN)**, a nonprofit organization run by and for autistic people, ensuring authentic input from the autistic community. As part of the Barbie Fashionistas collection, known for its diverse range of skin tones, body types, and abilities, the autistic Barbie features intentional design elements that reflect how some autistic individuals experience the world. These include elbow and wrist articulation to allow “stimming” movements, an eye gaze slightly to the side to mirror some people’s avoidance of direct eye contact, and sensory‑inspired accessories such as a pink fidget spinner, noise‑cancelling headphones, and a tablet with symbol‑based communication tools. The doll also wears a sensory‑friendly flowy dress and flat shoes for comfort and stability.
