The Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) has approved a new agreement between The Maine Water Company (MWC) and the Office of the Public Advocate to combine MWC’s ten separate rate districts into a single unified rate structure, marking a significant shift in how water rates are set across the state of Maine.
Starting February 1, 2026, transitional rates will be introduced to gradually move toward the unified rate, with typical residential customers using 1,200 cubic feet of water per quarter seeing monthly bill changes ranging from a decrease of $3.23 to an increase of $4.94 depending on their current district.
Importantly, the agreement does not increase overall company revenue and includes the Water Residential Assistance Program (WRAP), which offers a 22% discount on total water bills for income‑eligible customers, aligning with recent water affordability legislation.
Company officials say the unified rate will reduce administrative and regulatory burdens, support needed infrastructure investments, and maintain reliable service, with customer satisfaction historically high.
