Kyocera Corporation has successfully demonstrated a new underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) technology achieving transmission speeds of up to 5.2 Gbps in a short‑range freshwater test environment.
This breakthrough addresses the long‑standing bottleneck in underwater data links, where conventional audio and lower‑speed communications hinder real‑time sharing of high‑definition video, sensor readings and large data sets for applications such as ocean exploration and underwater robotics.
Key innovations include a proprietary physical layer tailored for underwater optical use and an optical front‑end circuit delivering bandwidth in excess of 1 GHz—about 2.5× the capacity of prior underwater optical systems.
Kyocera plans to showcase the technology at CES 2026 (January 6‑9, 2026 in Las Vegas) and foresees its future use in high‑resolution AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) video, sensor networks, and inspection of structures beneath the surface.
