Kevlar® EXO™ — the next‑generation aramid fiber — is stepping up from soft armor to hard armor, with a new announcement that it will be developed for use in helmets and ballistic plate inserts.
Instead of acting as a standalone protective layer (as in soft body armor), Kevlar EXO will now serve as a structural reinforcement within composite hard‑armor systems. This new role improves structural integrity by enhancing impact resistance, energy absorption, limiting crack propagation and dispersing energy under stress.
According to DuPont (the manufacturer behind Kevlar EXO), this expansion builds directly on the fiber’s proven performance in soft‑armor gear. By integrating EXO into helmets and ballistic plates, DuPont aims to deliver stronger, lighter, and more durable protection — improving safety for military, law enforcement, and other high‑risk users.
The fiber is already being integrated into plates for TYR Tactical, a major global maker of tactical gear.
Beyond traditional armor, Kevlar EXO’s enhanced strength‑to‑weight ratio and structural versatility open potential applications across industries — from aerospace components to flexible fuel bladders and other high-performance composite structures.
