Jim Farley, CEO of Ford Motor Company, says that dismantling vehicles from Tesla and various Chinese EV makers was a “shocking” moment that forced the company to overhaul its electric‑vehicle strategy. He revealed that when his team stripped apart a Model 3 and Chinese‑built EVs, the level of engineering and efficiency left Ford feeling behind.
Farley pointed out that Ford’s earlier EV, the Mustang Mach‑E, had significantly more wiring than its competitor—a complexity that increased weight and battery cost.
He reiterated that the rise of Chinese EV manufacturers is not just a regional concern but a global threat, declaring that Ford “can’t afford to walk away from EVs” if it wants to remain competitive.
In response, Ford spun off its EV operations into a dedicated unit, renamed it Model E in 2022, and is now pushing to launch a more affordable EV lineup—including a targeted $30,000 midsize truck by 2027—to catch up in a market dominated by price‑sensitive buyers.
