The surge in demand for data centers â driven in large part by the rapid growth of artificialâintelligence workloads â is creating a bonanza for skilled trades workers across the United States. Electricians, plumbers, and other specialists are seeing pay increases of 25â30%, with many now earning well over $100,000 annually. In some high-demand projects, total compensation (including bonuses and siteâspecific incentives) exceeds $200,000 a year.
For workers like 51âyear-old DeMond Chambliss â once a smallâcontracting business owner â the shift has been life changing. Since taking a nightâshift supervisory role at a dataâcenter construction site, he now oversees a crew of 200 welders, plumbers, and electricians and earns more than $100,000 a year â a significant climb from his former earnings. âI pinch myself going to work every day,â he says.
Companies behind the boom include major tech players building out their cloud and AI infrastructure: electric wiring, plumbing, powerâgenerator installation, heavyâduty cooling systems â all require specialized labor. Given the complexity and scale of these builds, contractors desperately need qualified hands, and many are offering perks like climateâcontrolled break areas, bonuses, and remoteâmanagement opportunities to attract workers.
But the staffing shortage is real. According to a trade group, the construction industry is short roughly 439,000 skilled workers â especially in roles like plumbing and electrical wiring. As a result, many projects are facing delays or long backlogs. For contractors, this has triggered what some call a âgold rushâ â a highly competitive scramble for capable labor.
For now, the boom is transforming livelihoods. Workers are seeing dramatic pay hikes, improved job security, and a chance to leave behind unstable contracting gigs for stable, high-paying roles on large-scale projects. The question remains: how long the frenzy will last â and whether the supply of skilled labor can keep up.
