South Koreaâs eâcommerce giant Coupang today disclosed one of the worst data breaches in its history, revealing that personal information of approximately 33.7 to 34âŊmillion customer accounts was exposed. The leak, which the company said began via overseas servers on JuneâŊ24, was only detected on NovemberâŊ18 â meaning the breach went unnoticed for nearly five months.
The compromised data includes customersâ names, email addresses, phone numbers, shipping addresses, and some order histories. Coupang stressed that login credentials and payment information (e.g., credit card details) were not exposed. The company alerted authorities as soon as the full extent of the breach was confirmed and is cooperating with regulators and law enforcement.
According to media reports, investigators believe a former Coupang employee â allegedly a Chinese national â who retained active authentication access after leaving the firm may be behind the breach. The misuse of internal credentials rather than a classic external hack has raised serious questions about the companyâs internal security and accessâcontrol practices.
Authorities, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, have launched an inquiry to determine whether Coupang violated personal data protection regulations. Meanwhile, security experts warn the exposed information could be misused for phishing, identity theft, or targeted scams â since attackers might impersonate delivery staff or customerâservice agents using the leaked addresses and contact details.
