Boeing is taking a stepâback approach as it strives to stabilise its production processes before ramping up manufacturing output. According to CEO Stephanie Pope, the company has recently been cleared by regulators to raise production of its 737âseries jets to 42 per month from a 38âplane cap.
However, Pope said it is âtoo earlyâ to commit to when the next output milestoneâ47 per month for the 737 and 10 per month for the 787 modelâwill be reached. The company is instead focused on meeting six key targets set by the Federal Aviation Administration, which include monitoring supplier shortages and reducing outâofâsequence work.
Boeing is also establishing a new âNorth lineâ at its wideâbody Everett facility in Washington to accommodate higher narrowâbody production. But Pope noted the next expansion wonât be needed until the company achieves its preâCOVID output levels of about 52 jets per month.
Meanwhile, rival Airbus is producing 63 A320neoâfamily jets per month and targeting 75 per month by 2027âillustrating how Boeing remains behind in industrial momentum.
