BHP Group has been ordered by Australia’s Federal Court to pay compensation to 85 labour‑hire coal miners in Queensland after requiring them to work on Christmas and Boxing Day in 2019 without offering a reasonable right of refusal. Each eligible worker will receive between A$800 and A$2,400, while BHP also faces a separate A$15,000 penalty payable to the Mining & Energy Union. MEU’s Queensland President, Mitch Hughes, said the amounts may be “small change” for BHP but the decision “reinforces the principle that Australian workers can raise reasonable grounds to refuse work on public holidays.” The ruling comes amid broader pressure on BHP’s remaining Australian metallurgical coal operations, where the company has signalled possible job cuts and operational suspensions citing low commodity prices and high royalties. #BHP #MiningRights #AustralianWorkers #HolidayShiftCompensation #SlimScan #GrowthStocks #CANSLIM
