Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans to invest at least US$5 billion in South Korea by 2031, the country’s presidential office said. The commitment comes as South Korea aims to become a top‑three global AI powerhouse.
The funding will go toward building new AI data‑centres on the outskirts of Seoul, boosting domestic infrastructure for advanced computing and artificial intelligence.
AWS CEO Matt Garman made the pledge during a meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae‑Myung at the Asia‑Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit. He also revealed AWS’s broader plan to invest US$40 billion in 14 non‑U.S. APEC countries by 2028.
The announcement aligns with a wider push that saw seven global firms commit a combined US$9 billion in investment over the next five years in South Korea. With its strong memory‑chip industry and ambitions in AI, the country is positioning itself as a major technology hub.
